Little Miss Brown
sat herself down
and started her blog today.
She jotted a line
said it was fine
and posted her blog for the day.

Trajano, Roman Emperor

Marcus Ulpius Traianus (Trajano) was born on September 18 in the year 53 B.C. in the city of Italica which is present day Santiponce. It is located across the river from Seville, Spain. He was emperor from the year 98B.C. to 117 A.D. The statues of emperors were rendered in two ways, clothed and unclothed. The statue in Baelo Claudia is clothed meaning that Trajano was still alive at the time it was made. Only after an Emperor died did they make statues that protrayed them in the nude and always in the prime of their life. Such a statue stands in Italica the place of his birth. At the time of Trajano's death He had a long list of degrees or titles added to his name. It is as follows, Impertor Ceasar Divi Nervae Traianus Optimus Augustus Germaneicus, Dacicus Parthicus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribunicia Postestate XXI, Imperator XIII, Consul I SAW Pater Patriae.

Baelo Claudia

Baelo Claudia is a roman ruin near the village of Balonia in southern Spain. It is on the Straights of Gilbraltar and from Baelo Claudia you can see northern Africa. The mountain ranges of La Plata (Silver) and San Bartolome suround Baelo Claudia on the remaining three sides. Its main industry was fishing, the production of pickled fish and the making of garum, a fish sauce made from the entrails of the fish. Trade with north Africa was good. Baelo was first settled in the end of the 2nd centery B.C. and it continued until it was abondoned in the 6th centry A.D. During the early years Baelo was successful enough to be granted the title of municipium. This in turn allowed them to add Claudia onto the name of their city. Situated as it was on the straights it was an import trade link and soon became an important admininstration centeras well. Within the city walls was a forum, admin. buildings, a theater, baths, shops and housing. There were also four temples that stood near the forum. Three were for the Roman gods Juno, Jupiter and Minerva. One set just a small distance to the side of these three temples was one to the Egyptian goddess Isis. The romans did not confine their worship to just their gods they also incorporated other foreign gods into their worship. Its quite unique to note that each god had their own temple. This occurance is quite rare. Most roman towns and cities had a collective temple for their gods. Baelo Claudia's decline started in the 2nd centery A.D. during the years of the Moorish invasions. During this time they were hit by a tidal wave that destroyed part of the city.By the 3rd centery they started to get hit heavily by pirates, Germanic and Mauritanian. For a brief period they had a revitalization in their economy but that soon ended. The existance of Baelo Claudia ceased to exist in the 6th centery due to the decline in the economy and then being it by earthquakes.
